Leaders receive praise for promoting regional thinking and action
Leadership Triangle is proud to announce the seventh annual Goodmon Awards, recognizing individuals and organizations that exhibit outstanding regional leadership. The awards were presented on December 11, 2008, at an awards "happening" presented by Leadership Triangle at American Tobacco, Bay 7, Durham, N.C.
As communities across the Triangle come to understand the importance of working together, regional thinking and regional cooperation become more essential to our individual and collective well being. Yet, we have few mechanisms in place for rewarding such regional foresight and action. As a result, Leadership Triangle has established these annual awards in honor of James F. Goodmon to recognize leaders and organization in our community who are regionally minded - and who exhibit that frame of mind in their personal and professional lives.
The 2008 Goodmon Award Winners are:
Individual

For his impact on business, schools, regionalism and charities, Bill Shore is the Individual winner of the Goodmon Award. Bill has been a guiding force in the on-going effort to address transportation issues and smart growth of the Triangle. Bill's innovative foresight brought about the formation of the Durham Public School's Business Advisory Council. It's a public-private partnership to bring businesses and school leaders together to work to raise the level of student achievement. Bill's regional leadership influenced the movement to bring three separate county United Way groups together under one, stronger umbrella organization now known as the Triangle United Way.

Durham County Commissioner
Becky Heron may serve on the Durham County Commission, but her work is known Triangle-wide. For 26 years, she's contributed in the areas of aging, transportation and protecting the environment. That is why she is the public official winner of the Goodmon Award.
Her nominator writes: "As the first female Chair of the Durham Board of County Commissioners, Becky Heron has served as a gifted and highly successful role model for other elected women in the region to follow. With her focus on the environment, Becky Heron played a major role in negotiations with other Triangle towns to preserve open space and waterways as regional parks. She advocated for senior citizens in Durham in the way of community centers and transportation to medical and recreational activities."

Teaching those who educate our children! That's the purpose of the Triangle Leadership Academy, the Goodmon Award winner in the Organization category. Dr. Steve Bingham, the executive director, received the award.
More than 4 years ago, Triangle Leadership Academy formed to serve five area school districts when school superintendents saw professional development as their biggest challenge. Now, Triangle Leadership Academy offers school leaders courses needed to earn masters and doctorate degrees. Just last year, Triangle Leadership Academy trained 2,600 professionals through 30 different programs!
Its mission is to transfer the role of leadership from the influential few to the skillful collaborative practice of the many. Triangle Leadership Academy is committed to developing a pipeline of new and current leaders who improve student achievement through professional learning communities as we embrace the role of public education in creating citizens who live in the global village of the 21st century.

The Upper Neuse Clean Water Initiative (UNCWI)
Working together for a common cause, The Upper Neuse Clean Water Initiative (UNCWI) exemplifies the good that can come from a partnership! UNCWI involves landowners, conservation organizations and local and state governments to protect our drinking water. Through purchase or donation of land or conservation agreements, this coalition has protected more than 17 miles of stream buffer and 17-thousand acres in the Upper Neuse River Basin.
